Imam Warith Deen Mohammed

Imam Warith Deen Mohammed (1933-2008) was an influential African American Muslim leader who played a significant role in transforming the Nation of Islam (NOI). He was the son of Elijah Muhammad, the leader of the NOI, and succeeded him in 1975. Under his leadership, he moved the NOI towards mainstream Sunni Islam, emphasizing the universal teachings of the Qur'an and the Prophet Muhammad. He promoted interfaith dialogue, community development, and social justice, and he worked to improve the lives of African Americans and the broader American society. His efforts helped integrate the African American Muslim community with the global Muslim ummah and fostered better relations with other faith communities

What is Imam Warith Deen Mohammed vision?

Imam Warith Deen Mohammed envisioned a model Muslim American community as one rooted in the teachings of the Qur’an and the example of Prophet Muhammad, striving to return to the original, pure human nature intended by Allah. This community would be enlightened and work collaboratively with people of all faiths and backgrounds to inspire a universal human family centered on common, natural values. Imam Mohammed believed African Americans, having been reshaped by their historical struggles, were uniquely positioned to lead this transformative effort, exemplifying the prophets' mission to fight oppression and guide humanity toward righteousness and unity. His vision included fostering this enlightened community to bring about a harmonious, just world, fulfilling both individual and collective destinies as ordained by Allah.
